MP Believes The PLP Government Has It’s Work Cut Out, To Regain Public Trust

Right before the House of Assembly adjourned on Friday, June 18, PLP MP and former Cabinet Minister Jamahl Simmons had one final message for both the government and the people of Bermuda.

Mr. Simmons told Speaker of the House the Honorable Dennis Lister that the PLP’s handling of the Coronavirus pandemic last year was based on taking the people along with them and that the people were comfortable with the government and their leadership during every phase of reopening the country.

In his opinion, the government needs to get back to that level of trust with the people that they had less than one year ago.

“ There will naturally be resistance [within the community] regardless, but I believe that the way that we have presented this to the public has amplified and heightened tensions and divisions and created fear and uncertainty that could have been prevented,” Mr. Simmons said.

Mr. Simmons told Mr. Lister that several of his concerns were already summed earlier in the day by the MP for Constituency #5, former BIU President the Honorable Derrick Burgess. Mr Simmons also said that the Government has their work cut out for them to bring Bermudians back together and to get the economy moving again.

“I think that we have some work to do to be able to get back to that time when we were moving as one country with one understanding of where we were going, one understanding of what [the final destination would look like], and how everyone fits into it regardless of whether people are vaccinated or unvaccinated,” his speech concluded.
