Harrington Sound School Highlights Top Winners In Education Minister’s- Essay Competition

According to Harrington Sound Primary School principal Cindy Weeks, the school puts a great emphasis on mathematics, reading and writing. Due to this, students at the school enter several writing competitions each year.

This year, a lot of them participated in the Minister of Education’s Father’s Day essay competition.

Two winners of the competition are seniors at the primary school. The overall winner Amariah Kirkos and E’Rynn Paynter, the eastern zone winners.

“ [The school] is proud of everyone who entered the competition and want to continue to encourage them to write,” Ms. Weeks said. “To those two students who won, we are extremely proud of their success.”

Faculty at Harrington Sound Primary continuously tell their students that they continuously exceed the virtues of excellence and see potential and greatness in all of their students.

Signs with the pictures of all 33 of the school’s graduating students are out in the school lawn. According to Ms. Weeks, saying goodbye to them will be very bitter-sweet, but she looks forward to seeing them move on in their educational journey, taking what they learned at Harrington Sound with them on the way.

“ Out of our 33 graduating students, I foresee a future Premier of the country, some hard working tradespeople, some professional careers in that group, there is a plethora of talent [in this class] and I look forward to seeing what they become,” Ms. Weeks said.
TNN also spoke with Miss Kirkos, who is ecstatic that she won the competition.

“ I got home and did not know anything, and my dad said that the Ministry of Education called him and told him that his daughter is very talented and that I had won out of all of the schools and students that had entered,” she said.

One thing that Miss Kirkos wrote about in her winning essay was about the time that she and her sister were racing and she fell down, ready to quit.

“My dad picked me up on his shoulders and he ran [with me], and we ended up winning the race,” she said. “He told me to keep going and he always tells me to do that in life.”
Miss Paynter is also proud to be one of the eastern zone winners and to represent her school.

In her essay, Miss Paynter touched upon how hardworking her father is. “My father works hard for the family, for himself and for everyone,” she said.

TNN also spoke with Head Boy Ethan Wells, who shared his COVID experience as a young student.

“ On Tuesdays, we would decide what the weekly assembly would be about and on Fridays, the assembly would be held over the intercom in Ms. Weeks’ office, rather than in-person,” Mr. Wells said. “ It was stressful at times to not be able to be with your friends or physically at school but instead being stuck at home, but it could sometimes be fun not having to come to school.”
