Lawyer Charged with Murder of Chavelle Dillon-Burgess

Eleven months after the sudden disappearance of 26 year old mother Chavelle Dillon-Burgess, her estranged partner and father of her child, Lawyer Kamal Worrell appeared in Magistrate’s Court this morning Monday March 1st 2021.
The 40-year-old Warwick resident faced charges of murdering and wounding Ms. Dillon-Burgess and seven separate charges of assault, Worrell was not required to enter a plea to the indictable offenses. He was also charged with tampering with and dismantling an electronic monitoring device on November 10, 2020 in which he pleaded not guilty.
“The only rational explanation for Ms. Dillon-Burgess’ disappearance . . . is that she is now deceased,” Alan Richards, for the Crown, said. “From a number of related circumstances, the person who is responsible for that is [Mr. Worrell.]”
Due to the circumstances surrounding Ms. Dillon-Burgess’ disappearance and the severity of some of the charges, Mr. Richards objected to Mr. Worrell being granted bail of any kind.
On the contrary, Mr. Worrell’s counsel Elizabeth Christopher asked that her client be granted bail.
“Under all the [given] circumstances, it would seem that Mr. Worrell would be a good candidate for bail . . . on [its] merit, this is an appropriate case for bail,” Ms. Christopher said.
After careful consideration, Senior Magistrate the Worshipful Juan Wolffe granted Mr. Worrell bail in the sum of $50,000 with the following conditions: two $25,000 sureties, that he wear an electronic monitoring device, that he report to the Hamilton Police Station four times a week and that he surrender all travel documents to police.
Magistrate Wolffe sent the case up to the Supreme Court, where it will be mentioned during the April arraignment session.
