HOTEL STAFF CRY FOUL OVER UNFAIR PRACTICES AT ELBOW BEACH

Yet another group of hotel workers in Bermuda are expressing dismay as word coming to TNN from staff made redundant at the Elbow Beach Hotel, as what is described as unfair practices.
A source telling TNN, some of the staff received emails/bills from the hotel for insurance costs paid totalling $2,200 informing them that once they have reimbursed the hotel the said owed funds, then they will receive their redundancy packages.
Others have been informed that if they are over the age of 65 years old, are officially retired with no option of a redundancy package.
One staff member stated "Some people have been told that after 34, 28,and 25 years of service they are retired and have been offered nothing at the end of their employment. They were told thankyou for your service and dismissed."
"We have been told that the union are not in agreement with what they have decided to do. We are up in arms, we dont know what to do. We are trying to find a lawyer that would be willing to handle this case.
What are we supposed to do? Where do we go from here, we dont have anyone that is standing up for us, we are trying to stand up for ourselves but we are getting nowhere."
Becoming very emotional the staff member shared "We need our money, there are bellmen and housekeepers that have bills to pay, we need our money.
"Not everyone has a savings, and although it was great what government did to help us with the Unemployment benefit payout, but we are now struggling to get through all of the paperwork required for financial assistance.
"Its so personal, meaning the paperwork, some people have never needed assistance like this, we have been responsible and hardworking, it's extremely offensive and degrading."
"I know this hit everybody and no one was prepared, for this but people are being taken advantage of, this isn't something people forget easily. I think it's wrong.
Asked about the BIU’s involvement our source stated “We spoke directly to the Union they said this is not what was agreed to happen.”
TNN speaking with the President of the Bermuda Industry Union Christ Furbert, who stated “We are very much aware of this issue with the Elbow Beach Redundancies and have ask for the Minister of Labour Jason Hayward to intervene.”
TNN awaits a response from the Elbow Beach Hotel General Manager on this latest development.
